Brent crude is frequently mentioned in economic reports and global energy market coverage, especially when oil prices rise or fall. Despite its widespread use in financial news, many people are still unfamiliar with what Brent crude actually is and why movements in its price have a direct impact on fuel costs, including gasoline and diesel used across the transportation and automotive sectors. As one of the world's leading oil pricing benchmarks, Brent crude plays a central role in determining the value of crude oil and its refined petroleum products across international markets.

What Is Brent Crude?

According to engineer Medhat Youssef, former Vice Chairman of the Egyptian General Petroleum Authority, Brent crude is a type of crude oil that was discovered many years ago in the North Sea between the United Kingdom and Norway. Although production from Brent fields has declined compared with previous decades, the crude grade continues to serve as one of the world's most important oil pricing benchmarks because of its high-quality characteristics and its long-standing role as a reference point in international crude oil trading.

Why Is Brent Used as a Global Benchmark?

Youssef explained that nearly two-thirds of the world's crude oil grades are priced based on Brent crude, including most Egyptian crude varieties. This is largely because Brent is considered a light crude with relatively low impurities, making it well suited for refining operations and highly efficient in producing essential petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, and aviation fuel. These qualities have helped establish Brent as a global pricing reference for crude oil markets.

How Does Brent Affect Fuel Prices?

When another crude oil grade is of lower quality than Brent, its price is typically determined by using the Brent benchmark and applying a discount based on the crude's quality, specifications, sulfur content, and impurity levels. As a result, Brent crude serves as the primary pricing reference for a large number of crude oil grades worldwide, meaning that increases or decreases in its price influence oil markets across many regions.

Although Brent crude may seem unrelated to the average driver, it is one of the key factors used in calculating fuel costs. Gasoline and diesel prices are influenced not only by local production, transportation, and distribution expenses, but also by global crude oil prices, the exchange rate of the US dollar, shipping costs, refining expenses, and government decisions regarding petroleum product pricing. For that reason, a decline in Brent crude prices does not necessarily lead to an immediate reduction in gasoline prices, as the final retail fuel price depends on several factors that are evaluated together before pricing decisions are made.
