Egypt's passenger car imports fell to $285.2 million in July, down from $329 million in the same month last year — a 13.3% decline. The figure signals a shift in local market appetite during the summer season. Data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics paints a mixed picture of vehicle and component imports, with a notable surge in buses and specialized vehicles.
Auto Parts and Tractors Post Sharp Declines
Imports of auto parts dropped to $72.2 million from $92.8 million, a 22.2% decrease. That is the steepest fall among all recorded import categories. Fully built tractors declined to $66.4 million from $72 million, down 7.8%, while goods transport vehicles recorded $34.8 million versus $38.7 million, a 9.9% drop.
Buses and Special-Purpose Vehicles Drive Gains
On the other side, imports of fully built buses, microbuses. Minibuses jumped to $11.6 million from $6.7 million — a 72.2% increase. The rise reflects movement in public transport and corporate fleet renewal. Special-purpose vehicles grew 88.3% to reach $11.2 million compared to $5.9 million.
Seven-Month Cumulative Figures Show Growth
During the first seven months of the year, passenger car imports rose to approximately $1.99 billion from $1.84 billion in the same period last year, a 7.9% increase. The monthly decline in July doesn't erase the cumulative uptrend. The market absorbed large shipments during the first half.
The combined figures place decision-makers before a precise equation. Imports of Toyota and other major brands are affected by exchange rates and import regulations. The drop in auto parts could pressure local supply chains. Observers are watching whether July was a temporary dip or the start of a new trend.
