Egypt's Car Imports Surge 23% in First 4 Months of 2026
Data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) has revealed a significant increase in Egypt's car imports across all categories during the first four months of 2026. The total value of imports reached approximately $1.327 billion, compared to $1.075 billion during the same period in 2025, marking a growth of 23.4%. This surge reflects a strong rebound in domestic demand for vehicles, driven by improved economic conditions and consumer confidence.
Passenger Car Imports See Strong Growth
Passenger car imports recorded a notable jump of 21%, reaching around $1.112 billion from January to April 2026, up from $919.746 million in the corresponding period last year. This growth is primarily attributed to increased demand for economy and electric vehicles, as stated by Montasser Zeitoun, a member of the General Automotive Division at the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce. The shift in consumer preferences toward more affordable and eco-friendly options has been a key driver.
Imports of passenger cars designated for personal use rose to $68.001 million during the first four months of 2026, compared to $40.835 million in the same period of 2025, achieving a growth of 66.5%. This substantial increase highlights a shift in consumption patterns toward individual vehicles, supported by the stability of foreign currency exchange rates, which facilitated import operations and enhanced consumer purchasing power.
Growth in Commercial Vehicle and Bus Imports
Imports of cargo trucks also rose to $126.772 million during the same period, compared to $105.422 million in the comparison period, recording growth of approximately 20.3%. This increase reflects the expansion of domestic and foreign trade, as well as ongoing efforts to modernize transport fleets to improve efficiency and reduce environmental emissions. The transportation sector's growth is closely tied to Egypt's broader economic development plans.
Bus imports across various categories recorded the highest growth rate among the main segments, surging to $19.818 million compared to $8.534 million during the comparison period, an increase of over 132%. This sharp rise is attributed to growing demand for public transportation and the expansion of public transit projects, reflecting a strategic shift in transportation policies to accommodate population growth and urban expansion.
Future Outlook and Market Trends
Montasser Zeitoun noted that this development in car imports reflects growing demand across different vehicle categories, especially economy and electric cars, which have seen increasing consumer interest due to the stability of foreign currency exchange rates. He added that the heavy and medium transport sector also witnessed notable expansion due to increased trade activity and government efforts to modernize the transport fleet, enhancing service efficiency and reducing environmental emissions.
With these trends continuing, Egypt's car imports are expected to maintain their growth trajectory in the coming months. Continued investment in infrastructure improvement and business environment enhancements are likely to further boost the automotive market, solidifying Egypt's position as an attractive destination for various vehicle types.
