Defective Brakes Violation: Egyptian Traffic Law Imposes 1-Year Jail and EGP 5,000 Fine

Driving a car with defective or poorly maintained brakes can cost the driver far more than a simple mechanical repair. Egyptian traffic law treats this negligence with extreme severity, imposing penalties of up to one year in prison and a fine reaching five thousand Egyptian pounds, since the danger threatens not just the driver but also passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.

Article 75 and Its Detailed Penalties

Article (75) of the traffic law clearly defines the acts that warrant punishment. Driving a fast-transport vehicle without either brake system, or with brakes that are unfit for use, exposes the driver to imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months and a fine ranging between three hundred and one thousand five hundred pounds, or either penalty alone as determined by the court.

The law doesn't stop at the first offense. If the same violation is repeated within six months of the final conviction judgment, the penalty is immediately doubled. A third offense brings an even harsher punishment: imprisonment for up to one full year with a fine of no less than one thousand pounds and no more than five thousand pounds.
