Warning: Charging Your Phone in the Car Could Lead to Battery Explosion

Plugging your phone into your car's charger might seem like a harmless routine, but experts warn it could be the start of a serious electrical problem that threatens both your phone and your vehicle. The danger does not originate from the charger itself, but from a deeper fault within the car's charging system, which can send unstable voltage to your phone, causing its battery to overheat dangerously, potentially leading to permanent damage or even an explosion.

How Does the Electrical Fault Occur While Charging?

Hamada El-Safty, manager of an automotive service center, explained that the normal voltage produced by the alternator is around 14.5 volts, which is perfectly safe for phone charging. However, when the charging system develops a fault, the voltage can spike to over 16 or 17 volts. This sudden surge places the phone battery under extreme electrical stress, rapidly increasing its temperature. This can drastically reduce the battery's lifespan, cause complete failure, or in extreme cases, lead to an explosion.

Main Causes of the Car Charging System Fault

The expert pointed out that the most common causes of this issue are a faulty alternator regulator or a weak car battery. When the voltage regulator fails, the alternator loses its ability to control electrical output, sending unstable voltage to all connected devices, including the phone. A weak car battery also disrupts the charging process, making the electrical system unable to handle additional loads like phone charging or other accessories.

Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

El-Safty warned that several warning signs can alert drivers before the problem worsens. These include frequently blown light bulbs, unusual heat coming from the car battery, or fluctuating light intensity when the engine is running. Ignoring these signs can worsen the problem, threatening not only your phone but also other critical electrical components in the car, such as the air conditioning system, airbags, and safety features.

How to Protect Your Car and Phone

The expert emphasized the importance of regularly inspecting the car's charging system, particularly the alternator, voltage regulator, and battery. Early detection of a fault can protect the entire vehicle's electrical system. It is recommended to visit a specialized service center periodically to check these components, especially if you frequently charge phones or other devices inside the car. Using high-quality, original chargers that are compatible with the car's electrical system is also advised to minimize risks.
