5,000 or 10,000 km?.. The Right Time to Change Your Engine Oil

'When should I change the oil?' It's a question every car owner asks, and the answers are as varied as the oil types on the market. Some drivers stick to the 5,000 km rule, others wait for 7,000 or 10,000 km, while newer vehicles may allow intervals extending to 15,000 km or beyond.

Amid all these numbers, one crucial fact gets overlooked: there is no single number that fits every car.

Why Does the Engine Need Oil?

Inside the engine, metal parts move at tremendous speeds under extreme heat, and the oil creates a separating layer that reduces friction and wear. It lubricates components like pistons, camshafts, and the crankshaft while also carrying heat away from the hottest zones.

Lubrication isn't its only job. Modern oils contain additives that help clean the engine, resist sludge and oxidation. Hold contaminants until they pass through the oil filter. Driving with degraded oil doesn't just mean poor lubrication — it means losing a key part of the engine's protection system.

Numbers alone don't settle the debate. The manufacturer sets the oil change interval based on engine design, oil type, and operating conditions, so changing oil every 5,000 km might be early for one car, while waiting until 10,000 km could be risky for another.

So, 5,000 or 10,000 km?

The correct answer lies first in your owner's manual. The company that designed the engine specifies the required oil viscosity, specifications, and change interval based on tests performed on that very engine.

Don't change oil at 5,000 km just because a friend does it, and don't stretch it to 15,000 km because the bottle claims long-life performance. If the manufacturer says every 10,000 km or 12 months — for example — that's the starting point, unless your driving conditions warrant the severe service schedule the company defines.

Kilometers Aren't the Only Factor

Here lies a common mistake: many owners only watch the odometer and forget about time. Oil doesn't last forever just because the car sits idle, which is why manufacturers usually combine both distance and time — whichever comes first.
