Many drivers believe that engine overheating is usually caused by a faulty cooling fan or thermostat. However, radiator blockage is often the main culprit in many cases, making periodic inspection of the cooling system essential to avoid costly repairs.

Warning Signs of a Clogged Radiator

Walid Abdo, manager of an automotive service center, highlighted several warning signs that indicate the need for a cooling system check. These include repeated engine temperature spikes, coolant leaks under the vehicle, coolant discoloration turning brown or containing debris, weak cabin heating performance, and reduced coolant flow within the system. Any of these symptoms requires immediate attention.

Causes of Sediment Buildup and Radiator Blockage

Abdo explained that sediment, rust, and impurities accumulate inside the cooling passages over time, especially when coolant replacement is neglected or when using fluids that do not meet the vehicle's specifications. This neglect leads to radiator blockage and a significant drop in cooling system efficiency, gradually raising engine temperature until it reaches dangerous levels.

Solution: Cooling System Flush and Regular Maintenance

The expert emphasized that the solution lies in performing a cooling system flush to remove accumulated deposits, using specialized radiator cleaners. He also stressed the importance of inspecting hoses for blockages or cracks and consulting a qualified technician if the problem persists. Regular cooling system maintenance is far less expensive than repairing damage caused by engine overheating.

Warning Against Ignoring the Problem

Abdo warned that ignoring radiator blockage can cause excessive engine temperature rise, potentially damaging the cylinder head gasket or other expensive internal components. The repair bill for such damage can be extremely high, while preventive maintenance keeps the engine in good condition and saves drivers significant money and trouble.
