Chinese autonomous driving technology company Momenta Global has launched its initial public offering on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, aiming to raise up to HK$5.89 billion (approximately US$751 million). This move comes amid a sustained resurgence in Chinese tech company listings, fueled by growing investor appetite for firms operating in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and automation sectors.

IPO Details and Timeline

According to reports, the subscription period began this week, with trading expected to commence on July 8. This offering ranks among the largest listings tied to the autonomous driving sector in Asia this year. Momenta is offering approximately 19.9 million shares at HK$295.6 per share.

Allocation of Proceeds for R&D

Momenta plans to allocate about 60% of the IPO proceeds to boost research and development spending, including expanding AI computing capabilities, increasing data storage capacity, and growing its engineering teams. Another 20% will be directed toward accelerating the deployment of robotaxi services, as part of the company's strategy to transition from a provider of driver-assistance systems to a major player in the autonomous transportation market.

Strategic Backing from Major Investors

The offering has attracted support from a group of prominent strategic investors, including Mercedes-Benz, funds affiliated with BlackRock, China's Boyu Capital, Singapore's GIC, Fidelity International, Oaktree Capital, Franklin Templeton, and China AMC. This diverse investor base reflects strong global institutional confidence in the company's future and its potential in the autonomous driving space.

Company Background and Milestones

Founded in 2016 by former Microsoft researcher Cao Xudong, Momenta provides driver-assistance solutions to automakers, enabling vehicles to perform steering, braking, lane-changing, and parking tasks while still requiring driver intervention when necessary. The company revealed that the number of vehicles equipped with its systems exceeded 680,000 by the end of 2025. Its client and partner list includes global automotive giants such as Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, SAIC Motor, General Motors, BYD, and Audi.

Financial Performance and Challenges

Despite the company's losses widening to 3.46 billion yuan in 2025 from 3.21 billion yuan the previous year, revenue recorded strong growth of 82.1%, reaching 2.41 billion yuan, driven by rising demand for intelligent driving solutions. This significant revenue increase underscores the growing market appetite for driver-assistance and autonomous driving technologies, further solidifying Momenta's position as a key player in this promising sector.
