Another Price Hike Wave Hits Egyptian Market: Dipal, Chery, and Changan Lead the Surge
Egyptian car prices saw a new wave of increases affecting Dipal, Changan, Chery, Haval, and Hyundai Elantra AD, with hikes ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 EGP. Dipal G318 led with a 50,000 EGP jump, followed by Dipal S05 at 25,000 EGP, then Changan CS75 Plus at 10,000 EGP. The increases come amid rising foreign currency rates against the Egyptian pound, likely continuing pressure on car prices in the near term.
Egypt's car market saw a fresh wave of price increases on Thursday, affecting passenger cars from Chinese and South Korean brands distributed by GB Auto. Increases ranged between 5,000 and 50,000 EGP, hitting models from Chery, Changan, Haval. Dipal, plus Hyundai Elantra AD. The newly announced price lists come as foreign currency rates climb against the Egyptian pound, a factor widely seen as the main driver behind recent car price movements.
Dipal Tops the List with 50,000 EGP Increase
The numbers are striking. Dipal S05 prices rose by 25,000 EGP, bringing the REEV extended-range version to 1.625 million EGP and the fully electric BEV variant to 1.775 million EGP. Dipal G318 saw a 50,000 EGP hike, with the Premium REEV trim now at around 2.1 million EGP and the Adventure REEV at 2.25 million EGP. These increases put Dipal at the forefront of the current wave, especially amid rising demand for electric and extended-range vehicles in the local market.
But what does this mean for buyers? The significant jump on Dipal G318 reflects direct pressure from higher import and shipping costs, factors that continue to weigh heavily on car pricing in Egypt. Still, Chery and Changan maintain a strong presence thanks to their diverse lineup and relatively competitive pricing.
Changan and Chery: More Moderate Increases
Changan CS75 Plus prices went up by 10,000 EGP, with the Premium trim now at around 1.5 million EGP and the Flagship at 1.65 million EGP. This is the smallest increase compared to Dipal's, but it's part of a broader wave sweeping most Chinese brands. Meanwhile, no new increases were announced for Chery models yet, though observers expect similar moves in the coming days if currency pressures persist.
It's worth noting that Egypt's car market has been suffering from sharp price fluctuations for months due to exchange rate volatility and import procedures. With every new wave, consumers face limited choices: buy at higher prices or wait and hope for stability—a scenario that seems unlikely given the current conditions.
These increases come days after other distributors announced similar price hikes, suggesting the current wave may extend to more brands in the near future. The question remains: will the increases stop here or are prices set to rise further? Only the coming days will tell.
