Nissan Tekton 2026 Launches in South Africa with 156-HP Turbo Engine

Nissan has officially launched the Tekton 2026 in South Africa, marking its first appearance on the African continent. The compact SUV packs a 1.3-litre turbo engine producing 156 hp and 260 Nm of torque. This launch follows its global debut in India by less than a month. Some are calling it the smaller sibling to the Patrol.

Nissan's Strategic Play in Africa's Largest Auto Market

Nissan made a calculated move. After selling its Pretoria plant to China's Chery and shifting to a full-import model, the Tekton launch aims to boost sales in Africa's largest car market. Competition there runs deep, but Nissan is betting on the new model to claw back market share. The timing signals a clear push for expansion.

Tekton 2026 Powertrain and Performance Numbers

The specs tell the story. The Tekton rides on the CMF-B platform shared with the new Renault Duster and is built at Nissan's Chennai plant in India. A 6-speed DCT automatic handles gear shifts, fuel consumption sits at 6.3 litres per 100 km. 0-100 km/h takes 9.89 seconds. Top speed reaches 198 km/h, with ground clearance at 212 mm.

Features That Put It Head-to-Head with Rivals

The Tekton targets the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Toyota Urban Cruiser directly. Boot space starts at 700 litres and expands to 1,789 litres with seats folded. Wheels range from 16 to 18 inches depending on trim, with full LED lighting in a distinctive C-Shape design. The 10.1-inch centre screen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Kit includes ventilated seats, a wireless charger, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 360-degree camera, cruise control. An electric tailgate on the Tekna+ grade.

Nissan's Message to Customers

Jordi Vila, president of Nissan Africa, said the Tekton was designed to compete hard and make customers fall in love with the Nissan brand again after a tough period. That statement carries an implicit acknowledgement of the challenges the brand has faced in the African market. The new SUV represents a bet on the compact SUV segment. That is growing rapidly across the continent.
