Mercedes-Maybach has unveiled the updated version of the GLS 680 for the 2027 model year, featuring a significant increase in engine power and a more striking front-end design. While not an entirely new generation, the SUV retains its core GLS architecture but receives important updates aimed at keeping it competitive against the most luxurious SUVs from Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Range Rover. The vehicle is expected to reach US dealers before the end of 2026, though Mercedes has yet to announce official pricing or a launch timeline for the Middle East and Egypt.

Mechanical Leap: 603 Horsepower

The most notable mechanical change lies in the development of the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which now produces 603 horsepower and approximately 850 Nm of torque. Compared to the previous version sold in the US market, which delivered 550 hp and 730 Nm, this represents an increase of 53 hp and roughly 120 Nm. The powertrain continues to utilize a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with a second-generation integrated starter-generator.

The electrical system can provide a temporary boost of 23 hp, while also ensuring smoother engine starts, energy recuperation during deceleration, and support for the start-stop function. Two balance shafts have been added to reduce vibrations from the V8 engine and enhance cabin quietness. Power is transmitted to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission, though the company has not yet released acceleration figures or a top speed for the new model.

Illuminated Grille and Standing Star

The front end features a Maybach-specific grille with a light-up frame and an illuminated Maybach emblem within the grille, making the vehicle more distinguishable at night. For the first time, a rising Mercedes star on the hood can be ordered with special ambient lighting, adding a touch of showmanship to the design. The digital headlights adopt a new signature based on two stars with rose gold accents, while the front bumper, air intakes, and chrome accents have been redesigned to reflect Maybach's signature styling.

At the rear, the tailgate and taillights have received design updates, including a star pattern within the lighting units. However, the overall silhouette remains largely unchanged. Mercedes has also refined the suspension, massage, and entertainment systems specifically for rear-seat passengers, ensuring the cabin experience matches the highest standards of luxury and comfort.
