Geely Picks Egypt for World's First Monjaro EM-i Launch Outside China, Prices Start at EGP 1.699M

Cairo — Geely has selected Egypt as the first country in the world to host the global launch of its all-new Monjaro EM-i hybrid outside China. Prices start at EGP 1.699 million. The announcement came during a special event hosted by Abu Ghaly Group, Geely's distributor in Egypt. The move signals the Chinese brand's confidence in the Egyptian market.

Why Did Geely Grant Egypt This Global Privilege?

Tamer Qotb, vice president of the automotive division at Abu Ghaly Group, was blunt. Choosing Egypt for the Monjaro EM-i's first launch outside China reflects the market's importance and its ability to absorb new hybrid technology, he said. The decision was no accident. Abu Ghaly is working with Geely to equip the car with the highest trim levels available, aligning with the push to bring the brand's latest products locally, Qotb added on the sidelines of the launch event.

New Energy Deal.. It Started with the EX2

The Abu Ghaly-Geely agreement didn't happen overnight. In late 2025, the group signed a deal with the Chinese automaker to handle the import and distribution of New Energy Vehicles (NEV) in Egypt. The first step was the Geely EX2, currently ranked as the cheapest electric car in the Egyptian market. From there, the rollout continued with the Geely EX5 EV and the EX5 EM-i hybrid. Geely's electric models captured around 30% of Egypt's total EV market this year — a figure that speaks to growing brand presence.

Monjaro EM-i: A Plug-in Hybrid SUV Specs Breakdown

The car belongs to the SUV segment. It runs on a plug-in hybrid powertrain combining a petrol engine with an electric motor. The core focus? Strong performance with reduced fuel consumption. That combination places the Monjaro in direct competition with rivals in Egypt's hybrid segment.

The number is striking. 30% of Egypt's EV market belongs to Geely — that's no passing share. But what does launching the Monjaro EM-i at this price point mean amid current competition? Egypt's market is shifting toward hybrids and EVs, and Geely is moving with calculated steps. While hybrid SUVs in the same bracket typically range between EGP 1.5 million and EGP 2.5 million, Geely sets its starting ceiling below EGP 1.7 million.

Competition won't be easy. Chery leads Egyptian market sales, but Geely is banking on plug-in hybrid tech and SUV positioning to attract a different buyer segment. The dual powertrain offers flexibility in daily driving. Chinese technology has become a standard in the local market over the past two years.
