Article Summary

BAIC Egypt has officially launched its X-Line range featuring the X55e and X7e models with e-DRIVE technology. The system delivers over 200 horsepower and a total range exceeding 1,000 kilometres with electric propulsion requiring no external charging. The company also confirmed plans for local CKD assembly in Egypt and announced the official price for the X55e.

BAIC Egypt has officially launched its new X-Line range, comprising the X55e and X7e models equipped with e-DRIVE technology, during a ceremony held yesterday at ESCA. The event marked the first real-world introduction of this technology in the Egyptian market, alongside the announcement of the official price for the X55e.

e-DRIVE: Over 200 Horsepower and 1,000 km of Range

Not what anyone expected. The e-DRIVE system delivers more than 200 horsepower with a total range exceeding 1,000 kilometres — figures that place the BAIC X55e in direct competition with currently available hybrid models. Engineer Ahmed El-Khadem, Head of Automotive Operations at EIM Group, said customer requirements have changed and consumers are now looking for strong performance with lower fuel consumption and longer driving range.

Does range really matter here? The e-DRIVE technology relies on electric propulsion without the need for external charging, meaning the driver fuels the car conventionally while still benefiting from an electric driving experience. The second model in the line, the BAIC X7e, offers the same proposition in a larger segment, giving customers two options across different price brackets.

Local CKD Assembly Plans

On Egypt's highways, external charging may no longer be the biggest obstacle. Engineer Taher Shaheen, CEO and Managing Director of EIM Group, said BAIC is one of China's five largest automotive manufacturing groups, with expertise dating back to 1958 and a presence in more than 140 countries and regions.

He explained that BAIC's choice of the Egyptian market was based on its advantages, alongside the state's direction toward localising the automotive industry, noting that BAIC and Alkan Auto are preparing to implement a local assembly project under the CKD system, contributing to the transition from import to local manufacturing. Shaheen affirmed that BAIC's ambitions in the Egyptian market aren't limited to sales operations but extend to participating in the future of Egypt's automotive industry.

Egypt's automotive market is gradually shifting toward hybrid and electric technologies amid growing competition from Chinese and European brands. With the X-Line announcement, BAIC enters a crowded race that demands competitive pricing and a strong service network. The official price for the X55e is now public, but the line's ability to secure a market position will be determined in the coming months.
