9 Essential Tips to Prepare Your Car for Long Holiday Trips
Your bags are packed and your travel plans are ready, but is your car prepared for a long-distance journey? Before heading out during Eid Al-Adha, taking a few preventive steps can help ensure a safer and smoother drive.
1. Check Your Tire Tread
Tire tread provides crucial road grip and helps channel water away from the tire during rainy conditions. Worn tread can reduce vehicle control, especially on wet roads.
2. Align and Balance Your Tires
Uneven tire wear may indicate improper alignment. At higher speeds, even a minor imbalance can become a significant issue, so it is worth taking the time to balance or rotate your tires before the trip.
3. Carry an Emergency Roadside Kit
Your emergency kit should include a backup mobile phone, a rechargeable battery pack, and essential tools such as a flashlight, screwdrivers, pliers, an adjustable wrench, and a spare tire. Additional items like flares, a first-aid kit, a fire extinguisher, and a reflective warning triangle can also be valuable in emergencies.
4. Learn How to Change a Flat Tire
Having a spare tire is important, but knowing how to replace a flat tire is even more useful. Make sure you have the necessary equipment, including a jack and a lug wrench.
5. Inspect All Vehicle Fluids
Check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid levels before departure to avoid unexpected maintenance stops. It is also recommended to monitor clutch fluid and steering fluid levels.
6. Verify All Lights and Signals Are Working
Test every exterior light and turn signal to ensure proper operation. Having a friend assist with the inspection can make the process faster and easier. Also, make sure no maintenance warning light remains illuminated before your journey.
7. Wash Your Car
At a minimum, clean the windows to maximize visibility. If your windshield wipers are worn or leave streaks across the glass, consider replacing the blades before traveling.
8. Check the Battery
A dead battery can quickly disrupt a road trip. It is generally easier and less expensive to inspect the battery and replace damaged cables beforehand than deal with a breakdown on the road.
9. Perform Routine Maintenance
If it has been two years since the last routine maintenance service, it is important to have the vehicle checked and ensure it is ready for a long journey.
