2027 BMW M2 xDrive Debuts with All-Wheel Drive for the First Time, Delivering Sharper Performance
BMW has officially unveiled the 2027 M2 xDrive, marking a new chapter for the iconic sports coupe as it receives the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system for the first time. The move is designed to deliver stronger acceleration and improved stability while preserving the aggressive driving character that has defined the M2.
The announcement comes after years of the M2 remaining one of the last BMW M models to rely exclusively on rear-wheel drive. The German automaker has now brought the same all-wheel-drive technology used in the M3 and M4 to its smallest high-performance sports car.
Same Engine, More Aggressive Performance
The new M2 xDrive is powered by BMW’s well-known 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, producing 473 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque.
Although output figures remain unchanged compared with the rear-wheel-drive automatic version, the addition of all-wheel drive significantly improves launch performance. The car can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 3.6 seconds, making it around three-tenths of a second quicker than the rear-wheel-drive model.
All-Wheel Drive with a Rear-Drive Feel
BMW stated that the new M xDrive system uses a rear-biased power distribution setup, sending torque to the front wheels only when additional traction and stability are required.
The car also features a 2WD mode that directs all power to the rear wheels while disabling stability systems, helping preserve the M2’s reputation for drifting capability and engaging driving dynamics.
Automatic Transmission Only
In a move that may divide enthusiasts, the new xDrive variant will not be available with a manual gearbox. BMW will offer the model exclusively with an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission.
Meanwhile, the manual transmission will remain available on rear-wheel-drive versions, catering to traditional driving enthusiasts who view the M2 as one of BMW’s last truly pure sports cars.
Enhanced Grip and Stability
Beyond the addition of all-wheel drive, the vehicle receives specific suspension, steering, and electronic torque distribution calibrations, along with an Active M Differential to improve traction and stability during spirited driving.
The M2 xDrive rides on 19-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels, while optional Track tires are available for customers seeking enhanced circuit performance.
New Color and Production Schedule
BMW has also introduced a new exterior color for the model, with production of the 2027 M2 xDrive scheduled to begin in August.
