One Tiny Bolt Triggers Recall of 2.86 Million Cars — Volkswagen and Audi Face One of Their Largest Campaigns

Volkswagen Group is recalling approximately 2.86 million vehicles worldwide due to a potential defect in a steering gear mounting bolt that could lead to a complete loss of steering. The campaign covers Volkswagen and Audi models including Golf, Tiguan, Touran, Caddy, and Q3 produced between 2013 and 2024. The scale is massive.

The Numbers Behind the Recall

According to Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority, the recall includes 895,832 Volkswagen vehicles in Germany, while the global total for the brand reaches 2,159,054 cars. Audi's share covers 696,547 Q3 models worldwide, of which 58,555 are in Germany. Combined, the two brands account for 2,855,601 vehicles globally, with 954,387 units in Germany alone. The figures speak for themselves.

The problem centers on a bolt within the steering gear mounting points, where moisture can cause corrosion over time. If the bolt corrodes and its head breaks off, the steering gear becomes secured at one fewer point. Under high stress the steering gear housing itself may be damaged — potentially leading to a total loss of steering in extreme cases. High loads on the steering system, such as during parking or low-speed maneuvering, can increase pressure on the mounting points.

Affected Models and Production Window

The Volkswagen list includes the Golf, Golf Variant, Tiguan, Touran. Caddy, all built from September 24, 2013, to July 1, 2024. For Audi, the current recall is limited to the Q3 produced from October 31, 2017, to May 23, 2024. It remains unconfirmed whether models from Skoda, SEAT, or Cupra are included in the same campaign.

No official reports have emerged regarding accidents or injuries linked to this defect. The company is inspecting affected vehicles and replacing the faulty bolt free of charge at authorized service centers. Owners of the listed models are advised to contact their nearest dealer to schedule an inspection.
