New data reveals that American electric vehicle maker Tesla has claimed the top spot among imported car brands in South Korea during the first half of this year, capturing more than 30% of the market. This strong performance comes amid accelerating demand for electric vehicles across Asian markets, reflecting a notable shift in consumer preferences toward eco-friendly mobility.

Remarkable Growth in Imported Car Market

According to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association, 184,032 new imported passenger cars were registered from January to June, a 33.2% increase compared to the same period last year. Tesla topped the list with 56,139 units, representing 30.5% of total imported cars. The brand's market share jumped from 13.9% last year, while its sales surged by 192%, allowing it to surpass traditional German luxury brands.

German Brands Lose Ground

BMW ranked second with a 21.3% market share, followed by Mercedes-Benz at 16.2%. Both brands saw their market shares decline by more than 5 percentage points compared to last year, signaling intensifying competition from electric vehicle manufacturers. Chinese EV maker BYD secured fourth place with a 6.3% market share, reinforcing its position as a key player in the global EV market.

Strong June Performance and Top-Selling Models

In June alone, 38,059 imported passenger cars were registered, up 27.5% from last year, driven by strong demand for electric vehicles. The Tesla Model Y Long Range was the best-selling imported model with 5,155 units, followed by the Tesla Model Y Premium Long Range with 3,318 units, and the BYD Dolphin with 2,747 units. These figures highlight the accelerating shift toward electric vehicles in the Korean market, with Tesla models dominating the sales charts.
