South Korea's Car Exports Hit Record High in June, Driven by EV and Hybrid Surge
South Korea's automobile exports reached an all-time high for the month of June, according to official data released Wednesday, driven primarily by robust sales of electric and hybrid vehicles. The record-breaking performance underscores the growing global demand for eco-friendly automobiles and the strength of the Korean automotive industry.
Record-Breaking Export Value
Data from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy showed that the total value of South Korea's car exports in June reached approximately $6.71 billion, marking a new record high for any June. This represents a significant year-on-year increase of 5.8% compared to the same period last year. The achievement highlights the continued resilience and competitiveness of Korean automakers in global markets despite various economic challenges.
Eco-Friendly Vehicles Lead the Charge
The ministry's report highlighted that exports of eco-friendly vehicles — including fully electric cars, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids — maintained their strong growth momentum, surging by 31.3% year-on-year to reach about $2.9 billion. This segment has become a crucial driver for the overall export growth, reflecting a fundamental shift in consumer preferences toward sustainable mobility solutions. The robust performance of this category was instrumental in propelling total exports to their historic peak.
Strong Gains Across Key Markets
The positive trend was not limited to a single region, as exports to most major markets recorded notable increases. Shipments to North America rose by 12.3%, while exports to Latin America grew by 5.1%. The European Union market proved particularly strong, with a 13.7% surge in South Korean car exports, indicating deepening acceptance of Korean brands among discerning European consumers.
Domestic Market and Production Figures
On the domestic front, South Korea's local market also showed healthy growth in June. A total of 159,725 vehicles were sold in the domestic market, marking a 9.5% increase year-on-year. Sales of domestically manufactured cars rose by 3% to 120,229 units, while imported vehicle sales jumped by a remarkable 35.6% to reach 39,496 units. In terms of production, the total number of vehicles manufactured locally increased by 11.6% year-on-year to 394,210 units.
Major Manufacturers' Contribution
The two largest automotive groups in South Korea played a pivotal role in this positive performance. Production at Hyundai Motor rose by 10.9%, while Kia Corporation recorded a production increase of 16.2%. These figures underscore the manufacturing strength and operational efficiency of Korean automakers, enabling them to meet the surging global demand for advanced vehicles, particularly as the world accelerates its transition toward cleaner energy and sustainable transportation.
