South Korean Car Exports Hit Record High in June at $6.71 Billion
South Korea's automobile exports surged to a new record high in June, rising 5.8% year-on-year to reach $6.71 billion, according to data released by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. This marks the highest export value ever recorded for the month of June, driven largely by robust global demand for electric and hybrid vehicles.
Export Performance Across Key Markets
The ministry's data revealed varied growth rates across different regions. Exports to North America increased by 12.3%, while shipments to Latin America rose by 5.1%. Meanwhile, exports to the European Union posted a strong gain of 13.7%, underscoring the competitive edge of Korean automakers in these key markets and the diversified geographic reach of the country's automotive exports.
Eco-Friendly Vehicles Lead the Charge
Environmentally friendly vehicles, including electric cars and hybrids, continued to be a major growth driver. The ministry reported that exports of these vehicles soared by 31.3% compared to the same month last year, reaching a value of $2.9 billion. This impressive growth highlights the accelerating global shift toward sustainable mobility and South Korea's strategic role as a manufacturing hub for eco-friendly automotive technologies.
Domestic Market Shows Strong Recovery
South Korea's domestic auto market also demonstrated robust performance in June, with total sales reaching 159,725 units, a 9.5% increase year-on-year. Sales of locally manufactured cars rose 3% to 120,229 units, while imported car sales jumped significantly by 35.6% to 39,496 units, indicating growing consumer appetite for foreign brands within the domestic market as well.
Production Uptick Driven by Major Manufacturers
On the production front, the data showed that domestic automobile output increased by 11.6% year-on-year to 394,210 units. Major manufacturers played a pivotal role in this growth: Hyundai Motor's production rose by 10.9%, while Kia recorded a 16.2% increase. General Motors Korea and KG Mobility also saw production gains of 3.4% and 21.2%, respectively. In contrast, Renault Korea Motors experienced a production decline of 29.6%, reflecting a mixed performance among the country's key automotive manufacturers.
