The move marks a radical shift for a brand that has spent decades being associated with McLaren lightweight supercars with two-seat cabins.

McLaren's first four-door, five-seat model

The new vehicle won't be a lifted version of an existing model. It will be the first McLaren with four doors and five seats, opening the door to a completely different customer: someone who wants to keep the performance and character of a supercar but needs more space and more practical daily use. That specific point is what the company is betting on to attract buyers who love the brand but find its current two-seat lineup hard to own as a primary family car.

Direct competition with Urus, Purosangue, and DBX

Entering this segment puts McLaren directly against strong names that got there first by combining extreme performance with practicality. The Lamborghini Urus, Ferrari Purosangue. Aston Martin DBX have all proven that high-performance luxury SUVs can be a massive revenue source. But McLaren is betting its model will be different, keeping the lightweight character and sporty performance instead of delivering just another conventional luxury SUV.

Hybrid power instead of full electric

Available information so far suggests the vehicle will rely on a hybrid powertrain, not a fully electric one. McLaren management confirmed the company doesn't currently see sufficient demand from its customers for a fully electric car, so it will focus in the next phase on hybrid systems that preserve performance, sound, and sporty character while reducing emissions.
