China's EV Charging Stations Surpass 23.68 Million, Up 41.9% Year-on-Year

China's National Energy Administration has confirmed that the country's total EV charging infrastructure reached 23.68 million units by the end of July. That marks a 41.9% jump compared to the same period last year — growth fueled by surging sales of new energy vehicles from brands like BYD and its domestic rivals.

5.1 Million Public Charging Stations

Public charging facilities in China hit roughly 5.099 million units by end of July, according to official data. That represents annual growth of 21.3%. But the real story sits elsewhere.

Private charging stations account for the bulk of the network — 18.58 million units. The increase here reached 48.8% year-on-year, more than double the growth rate of public infrastructure. These figures reveal an infrastructure boom that mirrors the rapid electrification of China's automotive market.

New Energy Vehicles Exceed 60% of Sales for the First Time

The charging network expansion coincides with a historic milestone for the Chinese auto market. New energy vehicles surpassed 60% of total new car sales in July — the first time this threshold has ever been crossed.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers reported production of approximately 1.57 million NEVs during the month. That's a 26.8% increase over July 2025. Sales reached about 1.56 million units, marking 23.7% annual growth — numbers that put enormous pressure on charging infrastructure to keep pace.

China Targets 28 Million Charging Points by 2027

The government isn't resting on current achievements. In October 2025, Beijing unveiled a three-year action plan to develop EV charging infrastructure. The goal is straightforward: reach 28 million charging units nationwide by the end of 2027.

The plan also calls for boosting public charging capacity beyond 300 million kilowatts. An even bigger ambition targets raising NEV share to 30% of the entire vehicle fleet by 2030 — part of the carbon peak strategy within the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030). These figures make one thing clear: China's electric mobility push is accelerating faster than most global markets.
