Global EV Sales Rise for Fifth Consecutive Month in July

Global demand for electric vehicles keeps climbing. Data released by Benchmark Mineral Intelligence showed that sales of battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids rose for the fifth consecutive month in July. The growth was driven by strong performance in Europe, despite declining sales in both China and North America.

Electric Car Prices and Market Signals

The numbers tell a clear story. Sales increased by 9% compared to last year, reaching 1.85 million units in July. That brings the total since the start of the year to 11.5 million vehicles. This performance reflects a notable shift in consumer preferences toward eco-friendly cars.

But what does that mean for different markets? The disparity is becoming obvious among key markets. While subsidies in Europe strongly support demand, the US market has been affected by the cancellation of federal tax credits for electric vehicles. Chinese car manufacturers are increasingly relying on exports to achieve growth. The gap is real.

Europe Takes the Lead

European sales posted a remarkable jump of 33%, reaching 450,000 units in July. That pushed year-to-date growth to 28%. France, Germany, and Britain recorded EV sales growth of 81%, 46%, and 43% respectively during the same month.

The consultancy noted that high growth continued in Europe's major car markets, with several seeing the return of financial subsidy programs for electric vehicles over the past eighteen months. Government support clearly had a direct impact on boosting local demand.

China, But saw a decline. Sales dropped by 5% to 980,000 vehicles, while North America experienced a sharp 27% decrease to 140,000 units following the end of US federal tax credits for electric vehicles. The rest of the world witnessed a staggering 97% surge to 280,000 units, signaling a shift in growth toward new markets.
