Battery no longer a nightmare: How tech advances are easing EV insurance fears in Egypt
Adnan El-Nahhal, head of claims at a major insurance company, confirmed that rapid battery technology advancements have shifted Egyptian insurers' perceptions of electric vehicles. The battery previously represented a risk due to its high cost, but companies have now moved from hesitation to actively competing for EV customers. This shift paves the way for greater electric vehicle insurance expansion across Egypt in the near future.
Is the electric car battery still a nightmare for insurance companies? The answer has changed dramatically in recent years. Rapid advancements in battery technology have helped reshape how Egyptian insurers view electric vehicles, opening the door for broader coverage expansion within the local market.
From hesitation to competition for EV clients
Adnan El-Nahhal, head of claims at one of the largest insurance firms, said Egyptian insurers were initially afraid to underwrite electric vehicles when they first entered the market. The reason was clear: the battery's high cost could represent a massive share of the car's total price, making it a genuine risk factor compared with traditional vehicle components. The gap was significant in risk and underwriting calculations.
El-Nahhal explained during his interview on 'Arabity' program broadcast on Radio Masr and hosted by journalist Hisham El-Zini, that this fear was not justified over the long term. The accelerated technological development in battery manufacturing over recent years has dispelled those concerns one by one, shifting insurance companies from a phase of caution into a completely new stage built on competition to attract the largest possible number of electric vehicles into their portfolios.
The new technology flips the insurance equation
One number summarizes the shift: the electric vehicle battery no longer carries the same financial burden it did just a few years ago. Continuous improvements in energy density, battery lifespan. Production costs have all contributed to reducing replacement and repair risks, directly impacting pricing and underwriting policies among insurance companies. Insurers now view this vehicle category as a promising growth opportunity rather than a risk to be avoided.
Electric vehicles in Egypt are currently experiencing a pivotal transformation in how the market deals with them. Companies that once refused coverage or demanded exorbitant premiums are now far more willing to offer competitive deals. This change in insurance philosophy reflects growing confidence in modern battery quality and its relatively lower maintenance costs, paving the way for wider adoption of electric mobility on Egyptian roads.
Expectations point to further declines in electric vehicle insurance costs in the coming period. With continued technological evolution, the outlook remains positive for EV owners in Egypt, who will find broader options and fairer prices when seeking coverage for their vehicles. Competition among insurance firms themselves stands as the strongest guarantee for sustaining this downward trend in premiums.
