Electric Cars Capture 7% of New Passenger Car Registrations in June
Egypt's automotive market witnessed a notable shift in June, as electric vehicles (EVs) captured a 7% share of total new passenger car registrations. According to data released by the Egyptian Motor Vehicle Insurance Consortium, approximately 1,507 electric cars were registered across various traffic departments during the month, reflecting a growing interest in this segment.
Details of Growth in EV Registrations
These figures paint a clear picture of the gradual shift in purchasing trends within the Egyptian market toward electric vehicles, supported by government incentives for eco-friendly projects and the expansion of charging networks for brands such as BYD and others. This market share, approaching 7%, marks a significant leap compared to previous months, especially with the diversification of available models, whether from emerging brands like the Zeekr 001 and Tesla Model Y and Model 3, or those launched by global giants such as the BMW i7 and Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.6.
Factors Driving the Rise in EV Popularity
This increased demand is attributed to several key factors, most notably lower daily operating costs compared to traditional fuel-powered vehicles, along with reduced customs duties on imports. Furthermore, the accelerated development of fast-charging stations in major cities has boosted consumer confidence in the daily commuting capabilities of these vehicles without range anxiety.
The BYD Atto 3 and Volvo XC40 Recharge topped the list of the most registered electric models during the month, facing stiff competition from other brands such as KIA and the Nissan Ariya, which are gradually expanding their market presence.
This share is expected to rise further during the second half of the year, with several new electric models entering the Egyptian market as part of the country's strategy to achieve a 10% sales target of all passenger cars by 2026, accelerating the transition toward a greener mobility future in Egypt.
