El Nasr Automotive Returns: First Egyptian Electric Car by 2026
After a 15-year hiatus, El Nasr Automotive Company, affiliated with Egypt's Ministry of Public Business Sector, is gearing up for a major comeback. The state-owned manufacturer has signed a strategic agreement with China's FAW Group to revive the iconic "Nasr" brand and produce a range of modern vehicles, with plans to manufacture the first fully electric car in Egypt and the Middle East by 2026.
A Historic Brand Reborn
Founded in 1960 by presidential decree as part of an ambitious state-led industrialization initiative, El Nasr Automotive began by assembling vehicles before gradually moving into full-scale manufacturing. After production ceased for over 15 years, the Egyptian government is now working to revitalize the automotive sector and reduce reliance on imported cars. The company's current lineup includes the "Nasr Sky" bus with 63.5% local content, the smaller "Nasr Star" bus featuring over 70% local components, and a small electric bus, according to an official cabinet statement.
Expansion into Electric Mobility
El Nasr's future plans extend beyond buses, focusing heavily on expanding production of modern vehicles, including electric buses, in support of the country's push for sustainable transport and emissions reduction. Officials from SN Automotive, the local distributor of Dongfeng in Egypt, have confirmed they are preparing to manufacture the first electric car in Egypt and the Middle East at the El Nasr plant. This marks a transformative milestone for the domestic industry, leveraging the company's state-of-the-art facilities that meet the highest international technical standards.
Production Capabilities and Partnerships
Thanks to its advanced manufacturing infrastructure, El Nasr Automotive is capable of producing a wide variety of models—both under its own brand and for other automakers—through partnerships with local and international private sector players. The company's flexible production lines are designed to accommodate multiple vehicle types, reinforcing its role as a key industrial hub in the region.
First Profits in Decades
In a significant financial turnaround, the Egyptian government announced in November 2025 that El Nasr Automotive had recorded net profits of approximately 35 million Egyptian pounds for the fiscal year 2024-2025—the first time the company has been profitable in decades. The government emphasizes that the automotive and components sector is a strategic priority due to its role in deepening local manufacturing, increasing added value, creating jobs, and boosting exports. With these encouraging developments, El Nasr's revival is poised to position Egypt as a rising player in the electric vehicle landscape across the Middle East.
