Dongfeng MAGE EV Officially Debuts in Egypt with 45% Local Content
SN Automotive, the partnership between Al-Safi Group and El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing, has officially unveiled the Dongfeng MAGE EV — Egypt's first locally assembled electric SUV, with 45% local content. The car uses a 120 kW (161 hp) front electric motor with 240 Nm of torque and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds. The reveal supports efforts to localize the EV industry and boost domestic production through private-sector and state-owned collaboration.
SN Automotive, the partnership between Al-Safi Group and El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing, has officially unveiled the Dongfeng MAGE EV — the first locally assembled electric SUV in Egypt, with 45% local content. The reveal took place at El Nasr's plant in Helwan. The number isn't ordinary.
Dongfeng MAGE EV Specifications
The Dongfeng MAGE relies on a front-mounted electric motor producing 120 kW, equivalent to 161 hp, with a maximum torque of 240 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds. Performance suits daily driving.
Power goes to the front wheels through a 50 kWh battery pack — figures that reveal a clear urban focus rather than long-distance touring. At a press conference held at El Nasr headquarters, several ministers and state officials attended, including Engineer Khaled Hashem, Minister of Trade and Industry, and Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy. The ministerial presence reflects the scale of the bet on this project.
SN Automotive and El Nasr Partnership
The conference was attended by Engineer Yahya Abdel Halim, CEO of SN Automotive, Dr. Nabil Hammad, Chairman of El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing. Engineer Mohamed El Saadawy, Chairman and Managing Director of the Metallurgical Industries Holding Company. The partnership between the private sector and state-owned companies is the core of the experiment. Will it change the game?
The car is classified as the first locally assembled electric SUV in Egypt, a step aimed at supporting efforts to localize the electric vehicle industry and strengthen domestic production capabilities. Assembly with 45% local content means a significant portion of value-added stays inside Egypt — unlike full imports. The percentage is expected to rise as the supply chain expands.
What Does Local Assembly Mean for the EV Market?
In the short term, local assembly gives electric vehicles a competitive edge on final pricing, especially with high customs duties on imported cars. Egyptian buyers are looking for a reasonably priced electric option. The Dongfeng MAGE may be an initial answer. Competition with imported models will be fierce.
Over the long term, the project is a real test of Egyptian factories' ability to absorb EV technologies, from batteries to electronic control systems. Success could open the door for other companies to assemble locally. The difference will show in the numbers.
