China's EV Charging Infrastructure Expands Rapidly: 23.68 Million Chargers by July 2026

China's National Energy Administration announced that the country's electric vehicle charging infrastructure is expanding at a rapid pace, with the total number of charging facilities reaching 23.68 million by the end of July, marking a 41.9% year-on-year increase. This staggering figure underscores the massive investment Beijing is pouring into its green transportation ecosystem.

Public and Private Charging Stations Growth Breakdown

Public charging facilities reached 5.099 million units by the end of the same month, recording a 21.3% increase compared to last year. Private charging stations, however, hit 18.58 million units — an even more impressive 48.8% year-on-year surge that proves the expansion isn't limited to commercial networks alone.

Data released by the national platform for charging infrastructure monitoring and services highlights the continuous expansion of China's EV support network, running in parallel with rising vehicle sales. This accelerated growth in infrastructure serves as a direct response to the country's ever-increasing domestic demand for clean vehicles.

New Energy Vehicle Sales Cross 60% Market Share Threshold

New energy vehicle sales in China accounted for more than 60% of total monthly new car sales in July — the first time this symbolic barrier has been crossed. In that single month, production of new energy vehicles exceeded 1.57 million units, while sales topped 1.56 million units, representing year-on-year growth of 26.8% and 23.7% respectively.

These figures, released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, paint a clear picture of a market shifting toward electrification at an unprecedented pace. As new energy vehicle sales continue their upward trajectory, China is accelerating efforts to refine its charging network to keep pace with growing demand.

Three-Year Blueprint for a Wider Charging Grid

In October 2025, China unveiled a three-year action plan to improve EV charging infrastructure across the country, aiming to establish a network of 28 million charging facilities nationwide, with public charging capacity exceeding 300 million kilowatts by the end of 2027.
