Before the New Tariff Decision: The 5 Cheapest Electric Cars in Egypt This August

The Egyptian government is studying a 5% customs tariff on fully imported electric vehicles for the first time. The decision remains under review, yet it raises serious questions about the future of clean car pricing locally. Until now, imported EVs have enjoyed full customs exemption, subject only to the 14% value-added tax.

Why Is the Government Considering This Move?

Observers say the expected decision aims to protect local industry and attract foreign investment into clean vehicle manufacturing. Egypt's EV market is expanding noticeably in 2026, with several new models targeting a broader customer base. Prices have become far more competitive compared to previous years, which explains the current momentum.

The Cheapest EVs Officially Available in August

The Geely Galaxy EX2 heads the list of the cheapest new electric cars in Egypt, starting at EGP 749,900 for the PRO trim, while the MAX version costs EGP 849,900. The car uses an electric powertrain that accelerates from 0 to 50 km/h in just 4.6 seconds, with a top speed of 130 km/h. It features rear-wheel drive and a turning radius of 4.95 meters, making it easy to maneuver in urban traffic.

The Dongfeng Box comes at a starting price of EGP 770,000 for the version with a battery range of up to 300 kilometers. The cabin seats five passengers, and the car includes a mid-size infotainment screen as standard. Competition in this price segment is fierce, as brands try to win buyers with advanced specs at lower costs.

The third contender is the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro EV, priced from roughly EGP 800,000. This model offers a sporty design and spacious interior, making it a practical choice for families. Performance benefits from instant torque for rapid response, while safety systems include anti-lock brakes and electronic brake-force distribution.

The list of five also includes two more models priced between EGP 750,000 and EGP 850,000, available through official dealers in Cairo and other cities like Alexandria and Giza. Current prices reflect relative stability, but imposing tariffs could change the landscape in the coming months. Experts advise potential buyers to follow legislative developments closely, as any customs increase will directly affect final prices.
