BYD Dominates Egypt's EV Market with 465 Electric Cars Registered in May 2026

The monthly report issued by the Egyptian Mandatory Motor Insurance Pool has revealed continued significant growth in Egypt's electric vehicle market during May 2026, with Chinese brand BYD maintaining its top position for the third consecutive month.

The report states that a total of 2,123 electric vehicles were insured and registered in May, including 1,600 fully electric cars. This reflects the steady expansion of this segment in the local market despite ongoing challenges related to charging infrastructure.

BYD claimed first place by a clear margin, registering 465 electric cars. The brand continues to strengthen its presence in the Egyptian market, benefiting from a diverse model lineup, competitive pricing, and the growing global footprint of Chinese automakers in the EV sector.

DFSK secured second place with 202 vehicles, followed by MCV in third with 100 units. XPeng ranked fourth with 96 cars, while Volkswagen took fifth place with 91 vehicles.

Chinese brands maintained a strong showing throughout the top ten. Geely came sixth with 87 cars, Arc Fox seventh with 84 units, and Deebal eighth with 78 vehicles. Nissan recorded 76 electric cars, while Zeekr rounded out the top ten with 69 units.

May's rankings highlight a clear shift in Egypt's electric vehicle landscape, with Chinese brands capturing the largest share of new registrations. Their success is driven by competitive pricing, modern technology, and rapid global expansion.

Industry observers note that the growing number of registered EVs reflects a gradual change in Egyptian consumer behavior, particularly among higher-income buyers and corporate fleets. This trend coincides with increased government interest in clean energy transition and growing investments in EV charging infrastructure.

Despite these developments, traditional gasoline-powered vehicles still dominate the Egyptian market. The report shows that 285,862 gasoline vehicles were registered, compared to 98,002 diesel vehicles and 11,749 bi-fuel vehicles running on both gasoline and natural gas.
