Undisclosed Vehicle Modifications Could Give Insurers the Right to Reject Accident Claims
Many vehicle owners spend thousands on cosmetic or technical upgrades to personalize their cars or improve their appearance. However, those modifications can lead to an unexpected problem after an accident. A driver may discover that the insurance company refuses to pay compensation because changes were made to the vehicle without notifying the insurer or obtaining the required approval in advance.
Vehicle Modifications Can Affect Insurance Coverage
Insurance expert Mostafa El Sawy warned drivers against making any technical or cosmetic modifications before informing their insurance company and receiving official approval. He explained that an insurance policy is issued based on the vehicle's technical condition at the time of inspection, meaning any significant change made afterward can directly affect the scope of insurance coverage provided under the policy.
He added that certain modifications, including installing xenon headlights or replacing the original wheels with alternatives that differ from the factory specifications, may increase the level of risk compared with the condition on which the insurance policy was originally issued. In such cases, the insurance company has the right to review the compensation claim if the accident or damage is linked to those modifications.
When Can an Insurance Company Reject a Claim?
According to Mostafa El Sawy, the issue is not the modification itself but the consequences resulting from it. If an unauthorized modification causes damage to the vehicle's electrical wiring, leads to a fire, or affects the operation of the vehicle's systems, the insurance company may determine that the cause of the damage falls outside the agreed insurance coverage and therefore reject the compensation claim.
He emphasized that the proper solution is to contact the insurance company before carrying out any modification, obtain formal approval, and issue an endorsement to the insurance policy documenting the new changes. Taking these steps helps protect the policyholder's rights, preserves insurance coverage, and reduces the likelihood of disputes when submitting a compensation claim following an accident or vehicle damage.
