Traffic Expert Warns: Glaring Roadside Screens Could Become 'Accident Traps'
Major General Dr. Ayman Al-Dabaa, a road safety expert, has issued a stark warning about the increasing dangers posed by illuminated advertisements and moving screens placed along roadsides in Egypt. He emphasized that glaring lights and video clips can distract drivers and impair their ability to focus, thereby significantly raising the likelihood of traffic accidents.
Regulations Governing Roadside Advertising
During an interview on the "Arabity" program on Egypt Radio, the expert highlighted that Law No. 208 of 2020 regarding the regulation of advertisements on public roads sets clear and strict controls. He explained that the law prohibits any advertisements on the road shoulder, with the sole exception of traffic control elements such as warning signs and directional markers, which are essential for guiding drivers and ensuring road safety.
Impact of Screens on Driving Safety
Al-Dabaa noted that some advertising billboards rely on dazzling illumination and moving video clips, which can cause eye strain and divert the attention of vehicle operators. He called on the relevant authorities to review these advertisements to verify their compliance with road safety requirements, warning that such displays could turn from mere promotional tools into "accident traps" if left unregulated.
The Role of the National Authority for Road Advertising Regulation
The safety expert praised the efforts of the National Authority for Regulating Advertisements on Public Roads, confirming that it is making significant strides in combating violations and organizing this sector. He stated that the authority is working hard to strike a balance between the revenue generated by these advertisements and the imperative of ensuring road safety, a challenge that requires coordinated efforts.
Compliance with Regulations to Save Lives
Concluding his remarks, Al-Dabaa stressed that protecting the lives of citizens is the primary goal when regulating roadside advertisements. He emphasized that adherence to legal and technical controls is not a luxury but a pressing necessity to reduce risks and achieve the highest levels of safety for all road users. He called on all relevant bodies to intensify oversight to ensure full compliance with the governing laws.
