As the summer season sets in and temperatures rise significantly, drivers face daily challenges in keeping their car cabins cool while reducing the strain on the engine and air conditioning system. Extreme heat does not only affect passenger comfort; it also impacts overall vehicle performance, from fuel consumption to tire lifespan. This article provides a set of practical tips to help you handle the summer heat and ensure your car operates at its best.

Smart Cooling Strategies for the Cabin

One of the first steps to take when entering a car that has been sitting in the sun is to use the air recirculation mode on your air conditioner. Upon entering a hot vehicle, set the AC to draw in outside air to cool the cabin quickly, then switch to recirculation mode. This setting cools the air already inside the cabin instead of continuously pulling in warm air from outside, resulting in faster cooling and reducing the load on the AC system, which saves energy.

Windows also play a key role in your cooling strategy. At speeds below 80 km/h, such as city driving at 50 km/h, it is preferable to open the windows rather than run the air conditioner. The effect of open windows on air resistance is minimal at these speeds, meaning you will lose almost no fuel efficiency while avoiding the full load of the AC. At higher speeds, it is recommended to close the windows and use the air conditioner moderately to maintain the car's aerodynamics.

Vehicle Care and Accessories to Beat the Heat

Choosing where to park your car plays a major role in reducing heat impact. Always try to park in the shade, and consider the sun's movement throughout the day. A spot that is shaded in the morning might be under direct sunlight by 5 PM. Spending two minutes thinking about where to park can save you from the discomfort of entering an extremely hot car, and thus avoid running the AC at full power for the first ten minutes of your return trip.

Using a sunshade for the windshield is a simple yet effective solution. These reflective shades keep the cabin noticeably cooler, especially since the temperature inside a car parked under direct sunlight can reach between 60 and 70 degrees Celsius within just one hour. A reflective sunshade maintains cabin coolness, meaning less energy is needed to cool the car when you return, reducing stress on the air conditioning system during the first few minutes of driving.

Additional Tips for Driver and Vehicle

Wearing appropriate clothing while driving in summer makes a significant difference in comfort. A light shirt means you will need far less air conditioning to feel comfortable compared to wearing heavy work clothes on a hot day. If you are heading to work, it is advisable to keep a spare shirt and change upon arrival.

Finally, do not neglect to check tire pressure regularly during the summer. High temperatures increase tire pressure. An over-inflated tire can reduce traction and increase the risk of a blowout. Maintaining tire pressure within the manufacturer's recommended levels ensures safer driving and better fuel efficiency, especially in hot weather conditions.
