Severe Traffic Congestion Paralyzes Cairo and Giza Main Roads – Police Advise Alternative Routes
Cairo and Giza witnessed severe traffic congestion this morning on most major road arteries, with significant slowdowns and bumper-to-bumper traffic at several critical points. The heavy congestion coincides with the peak morning rush hour, as traffic police units are deployed across the affected areas to ensure public safety, facilitate vehicle movement, and provide real-time guidance to drivers on alternative routes to avoid the gridlock.
Key Hotspots Across Cairo
The Salah Salem axis experienced intense congestion due to two separate traffic accidents. The first accident occurred in front of the Exhibition Grounds on the route coming from Al-Rahman Al-Rahim Mosque towards Al-Nozha, Sheraton, and the airport. Traffic authorities advise drivers approaching from Salah Salem and using Al-Firdous Bridge to take Al-Sikka Al-Bayda Street and then head to Al-Nasr Axis as an effective detour. The second accident happened in front of the Military Academy on the route coming from Joseph Tito towards the Aviation Bridge. Police recommend that drivers coming from Al-Nozha and Joseph Tito use Sheraton Residences or Abdel Hamid Badawi Street through Heliopolis neighborhoods instead. Central Cairo and Al-Azhar Tunnel also witnessed heavy congestion, as did the Autostrad axis for drivers coming from Helwan towards Maadi and Al-Qalaa, as well as those coming from Maadi to 15th of May City and between Gabalain, primarily due to the presence of heavy trucks. The Abbas Al-Akkad axis saw significant slowdowns, while the Ring Road, July 26 Axis, and October Bridge all recorded exceptionally high vehicle volumes and severe gridlock.
Police Guidance and Recommended Detours
In an effort to ease the congestion, traffic police in Cairo recommend using the Corniche El-Nile as a substitute for the Autostrad axis. They also advise taking Al-Azhar Street as an alternative to Al-Azhar Tunnel. Notable slowdowns affected Heliopolis, Maadi, and El-Monib, while high traffic volumes were recorded in the Qasr El-Aini, downtown Cairo, and Al-Azhar Tunnel areas. On the other hand, the Corniche El-Nile experienced intense congestion towards Maspiro and Al-Moassassa, while traffic flow on the Al-Tayaran axis remained stable without significant issues.
Traffic Situation in Giza and 6th of October City
In Giza Governorate, the Agouza and Mohandessin districts experienced scattered congestion due to increased vehicle movement on their main roads. Medium-level congestion appeared on the Haram and Al-Rimaya axes, while severe traffic jams were recorded on the Safr Al-Laban, Faisal, Al-Tawabeq, Giza Square, Sudan Street, and Bein Al-Sarayat axes. In 6th of October City, medium-level congestion was observed in most areas, with the exception of the Central Axis, which recorded heavy vehicle density requiring traffic police intervention to facilitate movement and direct drivers.
