Major General Dr. Ayman El Dabaa, a road safety expert, has called for the implementation of a seasonal road sign system on the Coastal Road as the summer holiday season begins. The proposal aims to ensure that any changes to posted speed limits are communicated directly to motorists through roadside signage. He stressed that drivers should learn the applicable speed limits from the road itself rather than relying solely on news reports or media coverage, helping improve compliance and road safety.

Seasonal Speed Limit Adjustments

According to El Dabaa, the Coastal Road from kilometer 21 to kilometer 153 experiences significantly heavier traffic during the summer season. As a result, the relevant authorities adjust the permitted speed limits throughout the period from July to September to better match traffic conditions and the increased number of vehicles using the route during the holiday season.

He explained that the approved speed limit is 80 km/h for private passenger vehicles, 70 km/h for passenger transport vehicles and motorcycles, and 60 km/h for tractor units and freight trucks. He noted that these speed limits are appropriate for the nature of the road, which serves a large number of villages and tourist resorts and accommodates high traffic volumes during the summer months.

Proposal to Update Road Signage

El Dabaa proposed installing seasonal signs alongside existing traffic signs or updating current signage to clearly display the revised speed limits and the period during which they remain in effect. He said this approach would ensure that every road user receives the information immediately upon entering the route, improving awareness of the applicable regulations.

He added that displaying updated speed limits directly on the roadway would strengthen compliance with traffic regulations and contribute to improving overall road safety. The proposal is intended to provide drivers with clear and immediate guidance throughout the seasonal traffic period, ensuring that the applicable speed limits are communicated effectively without depending exclusively on external information channels.
