Road Safety Expert Explains the Legal Distances for Installing Warning Signs

Road safety expert Major General Dr. Ayman El-Dabaa explained that the placement of directional and warning road signs follows precise engineering standards based on the level of risk associated with each section of the road. He stressed that the approved distances are not random figures but are carefully determined to provide drivers with enough time to recognize potential hazards, make informed decisions, and reduce the likelihood of traffic accidents.

Warning Sign Placement Inside Urban Areas

According to the road safety specialist, warning signs indicating hazardous areas or providing guidance within cities are installed between 50 and 75 meters before the actual hazard. These distances are specifically designed to match the speed limits applied in urban environments, allowing motorists sufficient time to observe the signs, understand the warning, and react safely before reaching the affected location.

Different Standards for High-Speed Roads

He added that the engineering standards change on open roads, highways, and desert routes where vehicle speeds are significantly higher. In such cases, warning and guidance signs are positioned between 150 and 400 meters ahead of the hazard or guidance point. This greater distance gives drivers the necessary time to prepare, adjust their driving behavior, and take the appropriate action before reaching the location.

The road safety expert emphasized that adherence to these engineering standards is one of the fundamental pillars of an effective road safety system. Properly positioned warning signs help reduce unexpected situations for motorists while providing adequate time to slow down, change lanes when necessary, or respond safely to potential hazards, ultimately contributing to safer roads and improved traffic safety for all road users.
