Motorcycles Take Over Egyptian Roads: Red Lights Ignored, Helmets Missing, Lives at Risk
The situation is dire. Motorcycles have imposed a terrifying reality on Egypt's streets, with riders running red lights, driving against traffic, and weaving recklessly between cars—all without a helmet in sight. These are no longer isolated incidents; they have become a daily threat to millions.
Alarming Registration Numbers
The numbers are stark and tell the whole story. A recent report from Egypt's mandatory vehicle insurance pool revealed that 297,143 motorcycles were registered in 2025 alone. This massive figure highlights the vehicle's explosive growth in popularity, but it also serves as a dire warning about the rising tide of traffic violations accompanying them. The market is moving fast, and the roads are paying the price.
Blame the Behavior, Not the Bike
Major General Dr. Ayman El-Dabaa, a traffic safety expert, insists the problem isn't the motorcycle itself—it's the behavior of its riders. He points to running red lights, excessive speeding. Chaotic lane-splitting as the primary causes of deadly crashes. El-Dabaa notes that delivery riders often face immense pressure to complete as many orders as possible in the shortest time. That pushes them to commit serious violations.
Yet the biggest failure remains the missing helmet. The expert stresses that a helmet isn't an accessory; it's the first line of defense for saving a life. Strict adherence to speed limits and traffic signals, he argues, is the only real barrier against fatal accidents. He concluded that the road is a shared responsibility. Curbing accidents starts with strict law enforcement and robust traffic awareness campaigns.
Motorcycles Dominate New Registrations
Gamal Fahim, a sales and marketing expert, offered a different perspective on the trend. He confirmed that motorcycles have taken over the registration market in the first half of 2026. They now account for nearly 57% of all new vehicle registrations, while private passenger cars only managed 39%. This wide gap reveals just how deeply the motorcycle has embedded itself as a primary tool for transport and work in modern Egypt.
