A historic Cadillac once linked to late Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser narrowly escaped permanent disfigurement after an individual broke into an old warehouse in the Attarin district of Alexandria and began dismantling its metal parts for scrap. The vehicle, which was once part of a presidential motorcade, had long transitioned into a private collector's item before facing the risk of being dismantled and sold as raw material.

From Official Fleet to Private Ownership

At the time of the incident, the car was no longer part of any government fleet or official service. It had been purchased by a private citizen at a formal public auction in 1981. Since then, the Cadillac remained stored in an Alexandria warehouse for nearly 45 years, alongside another classic vehicle, a Caprice. In 1995, the owner surrendered the vehicle's license plates to the traffic authority, formally relinquishing its registration status and retaining it purely as a rare historical artifact.

Details of the Dismantling Attempt

According to investigative reports, the suspect exploited the fact that his father owned an apartment adjacent to the warehouse, allowing him to sneak in multiple times through a skylight. He used power tools, including an angle grinder, a hacksaw, and screwdrivers, to cut parts from the bodies of both cars and transport them using a tuk-tuk. Authorities stated that the suspect was unaware of the vehicle's historical significance, treating it merely as scrap metal to be sold to dealers.

Prior to his arrest, the suspect had already removed several car parts and two iron gates from the warehouse in previous attempts. Local residents managed to detain him during a fresh attempt, leading to a confession that the crime was motivated by financial need. The public prosecutor ordered the suspect's detention for four days pending investigation, while the tools used in the crime were confiscated and the site was inspected for stolen and damaged parts.

Classic Cars Caught Between Neglect and Historical Value

The incident sheds light on the uncertain fate of many classic and historic vehicles stored in private warehouses across Egypt. These cars, whose historical and sentimental value far exceeds the price of their metal components, remain vulnerable to damage, theft, or dismantling due to a lack of specialized preservation, documentation, and restoration efforts. The story highlights an uncommon chapter in the lifecycle of retired presidential cars, some of which move from official service to private ownership via public auctions, only to disappear for decades before re-emerging under unexpected circumstances.

The case raises pressing questions about the need for mechanisms to protect historically significant private collections, especially those with national symbolism. Without proper awareness of their heritage value, these vehicles remain at the mercy of individual efforts that may not suffice to save them. Hopes remain pinned on heritage institutions and museums to step in and develop a comprehensive program for documenting and restoring historic cars scattered across the country.
