The Egyptian Compulsory Vehicle Insurance Pool has issued an urgent warning about the rising frequency of "compound accidents" caused by heavy trucks on Egyptian roads, describing them as one of the most dangerous types of traffic incidents due to their severe human and material losses. In an official statement, the Pool emphasized that these accidents can multiply their catastrophic effects within minutes, posing a major challenge to road safety.

The Two-Stage Nature of Compound Accidents

According to the Pool, compound accidents typically unfold in two devastating stages. The first stage begins with an initial traffic incident that causes sudden slowdowns or complete stoppages. The tragedy then escalates in the second stage when another vehicle, often a heavy truck traveling at high speed, crashes into the stationary or congested cars at the accident site. This triggers a chain reaction of successive collisions, dramatically amplifying the scale of damage and losses compared to a single-vehicle incident.

Key Causes: Speeding and Tailgating

The Pool identified excessive speed and failure to maintain safe following distances as the leading causes of compound accidents, particularly on highways and congested major roadways. High speeds deprive drivers of adequate reaction time to handle emergencies or come to a safe stop when a sudden hazard appears, turning a minor fender bender into a multi-vehicle catastrophe. The statement stressed that these incidents are no longer isolated cases, having recurred recently on several main roads and axes, leaving behind heavy tolls in lives and property.

Human Error Remains the Decisive Factor

The Pool underscored that human error continues to be the primary factor behind most serious accidents, calling on drivers to strictly adhere to safe driving rules and maintain full attention on the road. It urged motorists to avoid all distractions that could impair concentration, such as using mobile phones or engaging in other activities while driving. The statement also called for raising traffic awareness and strengthening compliance with safety procedures, especially on highways and routes with heavy truck traffic, to curb this dangerous phenomenon that threatens millions of lives daily.
