Used Car Pricing in Egypt Is Overinflated, Warns Dealers Association Head
Counselor Osama Abou El-Magd, head of Egypt's Automobile Dealers Association, criticized exaggerated pricing on used cars, saying some owners ask figures that don't match market changes. He stressed that higher new car prices don't automatically justify raising every used vehicle's value, since condition, model year, and equipment determine real worth. He called for reassessing prices amid growing competition from new Chinese models.
A stark warning just landed on the Egyptian used car market. Counselor Osama Abou El-Magd, head of the Automobile Dealers Association in Egypt, says pricing on a number of used vehicles is exaggerated, cautioning that sticking to inflated figures could make them increasingly difficult to sell in a market packed with newer alternatives.
Abou El-Magd: Some Owners Are Asking Prices That Don't Match the Market
The problem isn't just about numbers. Some owners of used cars are still holding on to old prices that no longer reflect the changes sweeping the market, according to Abou El-Magd, who pointed out that buyers now have wider choices than ever, from brand-new models to Chinese offerings with competitive specs, making an unjustified high price a hard sell.
The market has shifted. The head of the association stressed that continuing to price used vehicles at high figures without considering new car prices and specifications could lead to difficulty selling, especially with modern alternatives offering more advanced equipment and technology, creating a price gap buyers struggle to justify.
New Car Price Hikes Bring the Used Market Debate Back
October brought fresh increases. Several brands announced price hikes on a number of their new models this month, pushing the relationship between new and used car prices back into the spotlight, but Abou El-Magd warned against misreading these hikes, emphasizing that a higher new car price doesn't automatically mean every used car deserves a higher tag.
The actual value of any used vehicle is determined by clear factors. Its technical condition, model year, equipment, and the availability of competing alternatives all need to be reassessed when pricing any car for sale, according to the association head, who called on dealers and owners to revisit current prices to match market reality.
Chinese Cars Heat Up Competition in the Used Market
Competition is no longer local. The Egyptian market is seeing notable diversity in Chinese vehicles on offer, whether petrol-powered, electric, or equipped with extended-range technology, with prices and equipment varying from one model to another, adding pressure on used car owners asking high prices without real backing.
Buyers are more aware now. With every new model entering the market at competitive prices and advanced equipment, convincing a buyer to pay a large sum for a used car that may not offer the same level of technology or warranty becomes harder, a real test for the used market in the coming period that demands dealers approach pricing more realistically.
