Egypt’s Transport Ministry Reveals Details of Mit Halfa Railway Crossing Crash
Egypt’s Ministry of Transport has released details of a serious incident at the Mit Halfa railway crossing, where a pickup truck attempted to cross while the barrier was down and a train was passing. The collision destroyed the front of the vehicle and nearly resulted in a human catastrophe, renewing warnings about reckless behavior that endangers lives and disrupts train operations.
The ministry condemned the incident, stating that the crash destroyed the front of the truck after it struck one of the passing trains, putting the driver’s life at risk. It emphasized that such irresponsible actions threaten public safety and cause significant damage to railway infrastructure.
In an official statement, the ministry confirmed that the driver will be liable for the financial penalties imposed for the damage to state-owned railway assets. It noted that extensive awareness campaigns have been carried out recently across various media outlets to warn against crossing closed barriers and driving against traffic, yet some citizens continue to commit these violations, which can lead to fatal accidents and disrupt train schedules.
The Ministry of Transport stressed that adhering to crossing instructions at railway gates is a shared responsibility to protect lives and property. It urged the public to wait until the train passes and the barrier reopens before crossing, and never to attempt crossing while the barrier is closed under any circumstances.
