Up to 15,000 EGP Fine and License Suspension for Throwing Trash from Your Car in Egypt

Many drivers might consider tossing a tissue paper, an empty cup, or a cigarette butt out of their car window as a minor, insignificant act. However, the harsh reality is that this seemingly simple behaviour falls under serious traffic violations in Egyptian traffic law. Offenders face a hefty fine of up to 15,000 EGP, and the penalty can even extend to a full one-year suspension of their driving license.

Penalty Details Under Article 72 of the Traffic Law

Article 72 (bis 2) of the Traffic Law stipulates that any vehicle driver who pollutes the road by throwing waste, debris, or any other objects is punishable by a fine of no less than 5,000 EGP and no more than 15,000 EGP. The violation also covers emitting annoying sounds, thick smoke, non-compliant exhaust fumes, or leaking flammable materials or substances harmful to public health. Failing to securely fasten and cover the vehicle's load is also included. These penalties apply without prejudice to any harsher punishment that may be stipulated in other laws.

Escalating Penalties for Repeat Offenses and License Suspension

The penalty is not limited to a financial fine. The same article dictates escalating punishments for repeat offenders. If a driver commits the same violation again within six months, the fine is doubled. In the event of a third repetition within a single year, the most severe penalty is applied: the driver's license is suspended for an entire year, effectively banning the driver from operating any vehicle during that period.

Therefore, all drivers are strongly advised to comply with the law and avoid any actions that could lead to road pollution or endanger others.
