Labor Ministry and Ethydco Plan to Train Technical Workers, Boost Auto Parts Manufacturing

Minister of Labor Hassan Reda visited Ethydco, Egypt's ethylene and derivatives producer in Alexandria, to discuss cooperation on training and qualifying technical labor in line with Egyptian industry needs. The visit aimed to support the state's push for increased local manufacturing and development of feeder industries, especially the automotive sector. The goal is clear.

Egypt's auto sector relies heavily on imported components, which drives up the final price of vehicles. Training technical workers on local auto parts manufacturing could gradually reduce that cost. Reda stressed the importance of linking vocational training programs to the actual needs of factories. Benefiting from industrial companies' expertise in identifying required skills and specializations. This link is essential to prepare qualified technical cadres for modern industries. The move comes as Hyundai and Kia need local suppliers to cut prices. Will the plan work?

Ethydco: Numbers and Capacity

Ethydco was founded in 2011 and began operations in 2016 with investments estimated at 1.9 billion USD, employing around 850 workers. The company produces ethylene and its derivatives, most notably polyethylene and polybutadiene, with a design capacity for polyethylene of about 400,000 tons annually. These materials feed into multiple industries, including plastic products, packaging materials, and pipes. More importantly, they connect to several industrial supply chains serving different sectors, including the auto industry and its components. The number is huge.

Auto Parts: Where Do Petrochemicals Fit?

Plastics, rubber, and insulating materials go into manufacturing many car parts, from the dashboard to seats and even fuel lines. Ethydco produces the raw materials that auto parts factories can use directly. Developing these feeder industries means less reliance on imports and a higher local content ratio in locally assembled cars like the Nissan Sunny and Mitsubishi Attrage. Trained labor is the cornerstone of this equation. Without qualified technicians, factories remain unable to compete.

Occupational Safety: A Prerequisite

The labor minister emphasized applying the highest occupational safety and health standards inside production sites, especially in industries of a technical nature. Providing a safe work environment isn't a luxury; it's one of the pillars of sustainability and competitiveness in the industrial sector. Reda pointed to the possibility of enhancing cooperation with Ethydco in training youth on technical specializations related to the petrochemical industry, affirming the ministry's continued support for partnerships linking training, employment, and production. Partnerships with Renault and Peugeot to train technicians could serve as a model. But execution takes time.

The plan is still under study, but it signals a shift in thinking: instead of importing everything, a local industrial base is being built starting with human training. Car prices in Egypt won't drop overnight, but every step toward local manufacturing brings that day closer. Follow-up is required.
