Egypt's Automotive Manufacturers Association Denies New Import Restrictions on Cars

The Egyptian Automotive Manufacturers Association has categorically denied rumors circulating on social media about the government's intention to impose new restrictions on car imports, confirming that these reports are baseless and have no official foundation. The association clarified in an official statement that the current car import system remains unchanged, with no additional requirements or restrictions being introduced at this time.

Official Clarifications on the Current System

Engineer Khaled Saad, Secretary-General of the Egyptian Automotive Manufacturers Association, confirmed that the state continues to implement the existing regulatory framework for car imports without introducing any new conditions or restrictions. He pointed out that the current regulations aim to organize the market, ensure the quality of services provided to consumers, and support the state's strategy to localize the automotive industry while increasing the percentage of local components.

Law No. 9 of 2021 and Import Requirements

Saad explained that car import operations are already governed by the provisions of Law No. 9 of 2021, which includes a set of regulatory requirements. Key among these are equipping imported cars with at least two airbags, providing a network of authorized service centers covering various governorates, and maintaining a spare parts inventory of no less than 15% of the needs of the imported vehicles.

Compliance Review Before Approval

He added that competent authorities review companies' compliance with these requirements before issuing the necessary import approvals, by verifying the readiness of service centers and the availability of spare parts stock. Saad emphasized that these procedures are already in place and have not been modified in any way.

Financial Solvency and After-Sales Services

Regarding rumors about requiring financial solvency for importers, Saad clarified that the nature of the car import business inherently requires high financial capabilities. Therefore, the focus is on importers' commitment to providing after-sales services and ensuring spare parts availability, as these are among the most important elements of consumer protection and service sustainability.

Boosting Local Manufacturing Instead of Restrictions

The Secretary-General of the Automotive Manufacturers Association confirmed that the state's current direction focuses on enhancing local manufacturing and increasing domestic production ratios. He noted that the existing regulations aim to achieve this balance without resorting to imposing new restrictions on car imports, sending a reassuring message to both investors and consumers alike.
