Egypt's Auto Production Component Imports Jump 43.9% in June to $88.6 Million

Egypt's imports of automotive production components reached approximately $88.6 million in June, according to data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics. That is a hefty jump. The figure rose by about $27 million compared to May's $61.6 million, marking an increase of nearly 43.9%.

Where Did Nissan and Others' Components Go?

The import basket split across three main categories. Vehicle parts and accessories dominated with $67 million. Chassis fitted with engines followed at $18 million. Vehicle bodies brought up the rear at $3.6 million. Parts and accessories alone account for more than three-quarters of the entire group's value.

Looking at the broader ranking of automotive imports in June, passenger cars designed primarily for transporting people — including station wagons — topped the list at $348.6 million. Production components came second when all three sub-items are combined. Goods transport vehicles ranked third at $45.2 million. Public transport vehicles recorded $5.5 million.

Why Did Production Component Imports Surge?

Khaled Saad, Secretary-General of the Automobile Manufacturers Association, said the rise reflects improved demand from companies operating in the market for production requirements. He explained that the bulk of these imports consists of parts and accessories used in local manufacturing and assembly operations for brands like Hyundai and others. He added that growing component imports don't necessarily mean greater reliance on fully imported vehicles, since a significant portion ties back to cars assembled or manufactured locally, in line with the needs and plans of companies in the market.

The data reveals that vehicle parts and accessories form the backbone of production component imports. These components feed local assembly lines for brands such as Kia and Renault. As domestic demand for assembled vehicles climbs, factories ramp up imports of these components to meet production schedules.

The biggest number in the equation remains the $348.6 million in passenger car imports. That single line item exceeds production component imports by more than three times. Yet production components remain a vital indicator of local assembly line activity and their ability to keep pace with demand.
