Belgium is set to implement a mandatory digital road permit for all domestic and foreign vehicles starting May 2027, following an agreement between the country's three regions. The new system aims to regulate highway and regional road usage through annual fees that vary by vehicle type and energy source.

How the Digital Permit Works

Flanders, Wallonia, and the Brussels-Capital Region have approved the plan, which will allow drivers to purchase the digital permit—known as a "vignette"—either online or at gas stations. Each permit will be linked to the vehicle's license plate, ensuring accurate compliance tracking under the new regulations.

Fee Structure and Exemptions

Annual fees vary by vehicle type: electric cars will pay the lowest rate at 90 euros ($102) per year, while older gasoline and diesel vehicles will face charges up to 125 euros annually. Short-term permits valid from one day to two months will also be available, offering flexibility for occasional users.

This move marks Belgium's shift toward digital traffic management, with motorcycles and buses exempt from the new permit system. Some details remain unresolved, including whether Belgian drivers could receive tax relief through changes in the country's vehicle taxation system. The initiative is expected to improve traffic management efficiency and generate dedicated revenue for road maintenance.
