The Ministry of Local Development and Environment has announced the successful completion of the first and second phases of the national project to convert public transport buses from diesel to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). A total of 754 buses are now operational in Cairo and Alexandria, as part of an ambitious plan targeting the conversion of 2,262 buses belonging to the public transport authorities in both governorates.

State's Shift Towards Clean Energy

The execution and handover of these phases align with the state's strategic direction to expand the use of clean energy within the public transport sector. The project primarily aims to reduce carbon emissions generated by traditional diesel-powered vehicles, reflecting a clear commitment to improving air quality and supporting green transition initiatives.

Completed Phases and Fleet Distribution

The Ministry detailed that the first phase was fully completed with 377 buses, achieving a 100% execution rate. Similarly, the second phase was concluded with an identical number of 377 buses, bringing the total fleet now running on natural gas to 754 units.

The converted fleet includes 654 buses belonging to the Cairo Public Transport Authority and 100 buses for the Alexandria Public Transport Authority. This figure represents approximately 33% of the total national project target, which aims to convert 2,262 buses to operate on natural gas as a more efficient and eco-friendly fuel.

Execution Plan Across Six Phases

The Ministry noted that the national project is being implemented across six consecutive and carefully planned phases. This structured approach ensures the continuous provision of efficient public transport services to citizens without negatively impacting daily operations or the regularity of transport routes, guaranteeing seamless mobility during the conversion period.
