Toyota Motor Corporation has recorded a decline in its global sales for the fourth consecutive month in May, as the company continues to face significant pressures in key markets, particularly China and the Middle East, despite a positive performance in its domestic Japanese market.

Global Sales Drop 7.2%

The company announced that its worldwide sales fell by 7.2% year-on-year in May, reaching 834,279 vehicles, driven by weakening demand in international markets, where overseas sales declined by 9.6%. In contrast, domestic sales in Japan rose by 11.1%, supported by strong demand for the Toyota RAV4 and bZ4X models, partially offsetting the losses in other regions.

Sharp Declines in China and the Middle East

China led the decline among major markets, with Toyota sales dropping by 31.7%, as intense competition in the world's largest auto market, coupled with rising fuel prices, weighed on consumer demand. Sales in the Middle East also plunged by 38.6%, while the U.S. market, Toyota's largest, saw a marginal decline of just 0.6%, highlighting the uneven performance across different regions.

Production Affected by Asian Market Slowdown

On the production side, Toyota reported a global output decrease of 5.5% compared to the same period last year, impacted by a 3.8% drop in U.S. production and a 13.3% decline in Asian markets. This was partially offset by increased production within Japan. These figures reflect the challenges the company faces in maintaining production levels amid fluctuating demand.

Competition and the Shift to Electrification

These results underscore the ongoing challenges for the world's largest automaker, as competition intensifies in the Chinese market, demand slows in several regional markets, and the global automotive industry undergoes a rapid transformation toward electric vehicles. The sales and production data released by Toyota includes the performance of its luxury brand Lexus, as the company continues to execute its strategy of expanding its lineup of electric and hybrid vehicles, aiming to strengthen its competitive edge and maintain its position in global markets.
