Rohan: Adopting FMVSS Standards Is a Pivotal Step for Market Opening; Clear Regulatory Framework Brings Cadillac Back to Egypt

General Motors Egypt has officially welcomed the Egyptian government's decision to adopt the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), announced during a high-level visit to the company's factory in the 6th of October City. The tour included an inspection of production lines, followed by a formal ceremony hosted by Rohan Fernando, Chairman and incoming CEO of General Motors Egypt and Africa, in the presence of Steven Heinz, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Analysis; Robert Silverman, Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo; Engineer Khalid Hashem, Minister of Industry; and Dr. Mohamed Farid Saleh, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade.

Fernando: New Regulatory Framework Supports Market Openness

Rohan Fernando emphasized that adopting FMVSS standards represents a pivotal milestone for Egypt's automotive sector, marking a positive step toward establishing a more open and transparent market for U.S.-manufactured vehicles and spare parts. "This move aligns with General Motors' century-long commitment to the Middle East and Africa, which began in Egypt, and provides a more efficient and clear regulatory framework for accessing the Egyptian market," he said. "It has already contributed to the relaunch of the Cadillac brand in Egypt last May." Fernando added that the regulatory development directly impacts the economy by expanding consumer choices, enhancing fair competition among global companies, and strengthening Egypt's position as a strategic and promising automotive market.

Cadillac's Return with a Full Electric Lineup

In a related development, General Motors, in partnership with Al Mansour Automotive, officially announced the return of the Cadillac brand to the Egyptian market last May, featuring a fully electric luxury vehicle lineup. The portfolio includes models such as the OPTIQ, LYRIQ, VISTIQ, ESCALADE IQ, ESCALADE IQL, and ESCALADE, offering one of the most advanced SUV ranges in the local market. These models span compact, mid-size, and large segments, focusing on premium performance powered by electric technology.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce Steven Heinz welcomed the decision, noting that it paves the way for a significant increase in American vehicle exports to Egypt, broadening choices for Egyptian consumers and strengthening bilateral trade ties. He emphasized that a clear regulatory framework enhances confidence among manufacturers and importers, opening the door to further investments in Egypt's automotive sector. This step is part of the Egyptian government's broader efforts to modernize the automotive industry and attract new investments, with expectations that FMVSS standards will accelerate the launch of new models in the local market.
