Rivian announced on Tuesday that it is laying off hundreds of employees, representing less than 2% of its total workforce, as the electric vehicle maker moves to reduce its mounting financial losses.

Layoff Details

According to a company spokesperson, the layoffs will primarily affect teams in the services and customer service departments. The cuts come after Rivian reported a total of 15,232 employees across North America and Europe at the end of last year.

In an official statement, the company said: "We recently restructured a number of teams within Rivian as part of our effort to scale our business profitably."

R2 Launch and Strategic Shift

The workforce reduction comes just one week after Rivian officially began deliveries of its new flagship model, the R2 SUV. The R2 is designed to transform Rivian from a niche luxury electric vehicle manufacturer into a more mainstream brand, following a strategy similar to that of Tesla, the EV leader in the United States.

Rivian is betting heavily on the R2 to achieve profitability for the first time in its history, as the company has never posted an annual profit.

Significant Financial Losses

The EV maker posted losses of $3.6 billion last year, while delivering only 42,247 vehicles, according to company data. The automotive segment lost approximately $6,000 per vehicle delivered during the first quarter of this year.

These measures come amid intense competitive pressures in the electric vehicle industry, as companies seek to cut costs and improve operational efficiency to achieve financial sustainability.
