Industry and Investment Ministers Inspect General Motors Egypt Plant in 6th of October City
Engineer Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry and Internal Trade, and Dr. Mohamed Farid, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, conducted an inspection tour of the production lines at the General Motors Egypt plant in 6th of October City on Wednesday. The visit underscores the Egyptian government's commitment to supporting the industrial sector and strengthening the role of established global companies in the local market.
Adoption of US Standards to Boost Investment
The visit coincided with a press conference held at the plant to announce the Egyptian government's official adoption of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). This strategic move aims to streamline the import of American vehicles and spare parts into the Egyptian market, opening new avenues for trade and investment between the two nations.
Minister of Industry Highlights Strategic Importance
Engineer Khaled Hashem stated that adopting these safety standards reflects the state's direction toward attracting more investments across various industrial sectors. He highlighted Egypt's strategic geographical location, access to one of the largest consumer markets in the Middle East and Africa, a wide network of trade agreements, and the availability of skilled labor. These factors collectively strengthen Egypt's position as a regional manufacturing hub.
The Minister added that the presence of Chevrolet's parent company, General Motors, in Egypt for over 40 years embodies the strength of economic relations between Egypt and the United States. He praised the company's ongoing achievements, noting that it has produced over one million vehicles locally, and that its Egyptian plant is the only General Motors facility in Africa and the Middle East.
Investment Minister on Economic Reforms
For his part, Dr. Mohamed Farid affirmed that the recognition of the FMVSS is part of the state's reform program aimed at improving the investment climate. He explained that these measures are designed to facilitate the entry of products into the Egyptian market, thereby enhancing competitiveness and attracting more foreign capital to operate in the country.
